THE ANALYSIS OF POINT OF VIEW FROM SHORT STORY OF DREAM BY ANTON CHECKOV

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Learning about prose will be very interested. In this subject we try to analysis about element of the prose in order to understand it. All of students have allotted becoming some groups. Every group was given the title for analysis the short story. For example first group had title about the title and they presentated about what had related to title in the prose.
There are some element of the prose that consist of title, theme, character, characterization, setting, plot and point of view. It must have in good prose because no prose if it doesn’t have that elements. For instance the prose don’t have character I think that is no prose because no match with the rules to arrange prose.
In this paper, the writer is only thought about point of view. If my friends ask guestion to go out from this thought we will not answer it. For example some people in this discuss ask about the difference between point of view and characterization that don’t have answered for it because we just discuss about point of view –no consider with the others.
The writers will tell you about an analysis of point of view in Anton Chechov’s Dream. In chechov’s short story we just take point of view element in order to easily understand what is point of view and how to indentify it.
In the discussion session the writers expect to all of our friends in order to take partipation for making the discussion to be interested.

CHAPTER II
There are some interpretation of point of view according to some resources that consist of:
1. Point of view is a position or perspective from which something is considered or evaluated (Merriam-Webster:2003)
2. Point of view (POV) is the way an author tells a story. The two most common points of view are the first person point of view and the third person point of view. (Gary Robert muschla:2011)
3. Point of view is a way of thinking about something; [someone’s] viewpoint; an attitude or expression of self-interest.( Richard A. Spears:2000)
As mentioning in the above, the point of view will give to reader about the story is told and how to put some character from author.
A. FINDING
In this session, the writer will explain about kind of point of view and find out it in the short story in order to make easily to be understood by readers.
According to Cleanth Brooks, the point of view is allotted becoming four consisting of:
1. First person point of view
In the first person point of view, the narrator will tell the story to reader with some marks of word from explaining the author in the story consisting of “I and we”. “I and We” are the word from telling about point of view in the story. So the writer will find out the first person point of view in the short of dream that is written by Anton Checkov. The writer will mention what paragraph spoke about the first person point of view in the story of dream. Let’s find out it:
The travelers had been a long while on their way, but they seemed to be always on the same small patch of ground in front of them there stretched thirty feet of muddy black-brown mud, behind them the same, and wherever one looked further, an impenetrable wall of white fog. They went on and on, but the ground remained the same. The wall was no nearer, and the patch on which they walked seemed still the same patch. They got a glimpse of a white, clumsy-looking stone, small ravine or abundle of hay dropped by a passer-by, the brief glimmer of a great muddy puddle, or, suddenly a shadow with vague outlines would come into view ahead of them;…….. (dream: 16 P: 2)

The other day I was washing a sleve in the pond and caught a reptile- see, as long as a finger, with gills and a tail. The first minute I thought it was a fish, then I looked- and, blow it! If it hadn’t paws. (dream:17 p 3)

I think enough to give u example point of view especially first person point of view. For more understood the first person point of view you can seek alone in the story of dream yet you must just know key of words that is “I and We”
2. Third person point of view
Third person point of view is marked by some words consisting of “he, she, it and they” and it can replace with name of people or noun (animal, stone, book and so on). When the reader want to the third person point of view you can see example that is given by writer in the story of dream accurately.
He was a frail little man, weak sickly-looking, with small, colourless, and extremely indefinite features. His eyebrows were scanty, his expression mild and submissive; he had scarcely a trace of a moustance, though he was over thirty…….(dream: 15 p2)

Ptaha shrugged his shoulder and slapped himself on the extreme perplexity. The other constable, Nikandr Sapozhnikov, maintained silence. He was not so naïve as ptaha, and apparently knew very well the reason which might induce an orthodox Christian to conceal his name from other people……(dream:17 p2)
That is some example the third person point of view in the story of dream if you find out again the word that is marked by “he, she, it and they or substitute for name of people and noun. So you can catch in it alone for making you understand about the third person point of view.
3. Second person point of view
The narrator will tell the story with second person like “You”. “You” is marker in second person point of view. So if you seek the second person point of view in the story, you must find out the marker “you”. For example in the story of dream that is:
You are a robber and treated like a robber- worse than any dog. You can’t sleep, you can’t eat or even say your prayers (dream: 20 p4)

……. You catch an eel-pout or a roach of some sort and are as pleased as though you had met your brother. And would you believe it , there’s a special art for every fish: you catch one with a live bait, you catch another with a grub,….(dream:21 p2)
That is example for the second person point of view in the story of dream. In the second person point of view the writer only stress to the reader if you want to look at the second person point of view. The easy ploy look at it that is to seek the marker “ you”.
4. Omniscient point of view
Omniscient point of view is the style of telling a story in which the narrator is not a character in the story but knows everything that happens and what all the characters experience, think, and feel(longman dictionary).
A narrator who know every thing about all the character is all knowing or omniscient. Writer will give you the example omniscient point of view in the short story of dream comprising:
Two peasant constables- one a stubby, black-bearded individual with such exceptionally short legs that if looked at him from behind it seemed as though his legs began much lower down than in other people; the other, long, thin, and straight as a stick, with a scanty beard of dark reddish colour- were escorting to the district town a tramp who refused to remember his name. The first waddled along, looking from side to side, chewing now a straw, now his own sleeve, slapping himself on the haunches and humming, and altogether had a careless and frivolous air; the other, in spite of his lean face and narrow shoulders, looked solid, grave, and substantial; in the lines and expression of his whole figure he was like the priest among the old believers, or the warriors who are painted on old-fashioned ikons. “for his wisdom God had added to his forehead”—that is, he was bald – which increased the resemblance referred to. The first was called Andrey Ptaha, the second Nikandr Sapozhnikov (dream:15 p1).
That is point of view according to Cleanth Brooks, from explaining and example in above that is so clearly to understand about point of view to us.
B. DISCUSSION
In the part of finding the writer have clarified about kind of point of view according to Cleanth Brook, yet there are some kind of point of view according to the other expert such as Richard nordquist that are the first person point of view(I and we), the second person (you), the third person( he, she, it and they).
All of expert in literature will be completed the other one. So every expert have the way how to look the point of view based on their selves.
In this session the writer try to give you some tips how to know about point of view consisting of:
1) To know about what is point of view for becoming basicly to you.
2) Read the short story accurately
3) Find out the author in the short story.
4) Make classification about point of view like explanation in the above. For example first person point of view(I and we) and in the like.

CHAPTER III
